Defensive Driver Training for Employers

This four-hour class is designed to reduce driving liability for Employers.

There is no exact national statistic tracking how many U.S. drivers have completed defensive driving or refresher training. While millions of drivers have taken a course at some point—often after a ticket or during their teen years—many employees on today’s roads have never received formal defensive driving instruction as adults, and most have never been trained in employer-specific driving risks and liability.

Driving is a task we do every day, which makes it easy to take for granted. Over time, habits replace intention, and risk awareness fades—especially for employees who drive regularly for work. Defensive driving training helps reset that mindset by reinforcing proven collision-prevention strategies, improving decision-making under real-world conditions, and reminding drivers how quickly small mistakes can lead to serious consequences.

For employers, defensive driving training is not about punishment or checking a box—it’s about preventing crashes before they happen. Even one preventable collision can result in injuries, vehicle damage, lost productivity, increased insurance costs, and long-term liability exposure. Providing regular defensive driving education demonstrates a proactive commitment to employee safety, public safety, and organizational responsibility.

In short, defensive driving training fills a critical gap—turning everyday driving into intentional, safer driving, and helping employees recognize that when they drive for work, they represent more than themselves.

Driving is often the most dangerous part of an employee’s workday, posing risks to both safety and productivity. Our Employer Defensive Driver Course takes a research-based approach to improve driver behavior, attitudes, and habits, helping your organization:

  • Increase employee safety
  • Reduce accidents and related costs
  • Minimize liability risks

What is covered in the course?

  • How vehicles are designed to work, including braking, traction, vehicle balance, and how today’s new vehicle technologies and driver-assist systems function—and their limitations.
  • Rules of the road specific to your state, ensuring drivers understand current laws, updates, and legal responsibilities while driving for work.
  • Everyday driving skills that prevent collisions, such as space management, hazard recognition, speed control, and decision-making.
  • Emergency driving skills, including how to respond to sudden hazards, evasive maneuvers, and unexpected roadway conditions.
  • Driver attitudes and high-risk habits, such as distraction, complacency, speeding, and aggressive driving—and how these behaviors increase crash risk.
  • How employee driving impacts the employer, including liability, financial exposure, public trust, and workplace safety responsibilities.
